What Is An Eyesight Test or Eye Exam?
An eye test or eye exam is a medical assessment of your eyes in order to find if there are any problems with you optical globes.
There are different types of eyesight tests that can be performed including:
- basic eyesight test
- ophthalmoscopy eye exam
- intraocular pressure eye exam
- online eye test
Solution for the eye problems is not always as easy as a pair of eye glasses or contact lens. There are conditions for which glasses or lenses won't do any good.
Basic Eyesight Test
The most basic kind of eye test consists of an external eye exam and a visual acuity eyesight test.
In the case of the external eye exam, eye doctor will inspect several things including:
- eyelids
- tissue surrounding it
- conjunctiva
- sclerathe
- cornea
- iris
In the case of the visual acuity eye exam, you will be checked for your eye performance - how well are you able to see and notice things at different distances.
Then ophthalmologist will determine if you require any kind of further tests.
Ophthalmoscopy Eye Exam
One of the other eye tests is an ophthalmoscopy.
Ophthalmoscopy eye exam detects if a patient has cataracts.
This eye test lets the doctor look directly to the retina and the tissue that is located in the back of the eye.
A special kind of eye drops need to be used in the patient eyes for ophthalmoscopy eye exam.
These eye drops have the ability to dilate the pupil, making the eye test much easier.
Intraocular Pressure Eye Test
Another kind of test is the intraocular pressure eye test.
During intraocular pressure eye exam the amount of outflow, and the resistance of the outflow, of the aqueous humour of the eye will be determined.
Eye Test Online
Online eye exam won't be able to cover some of the above eye tests which should be conducted in an eye doctor's office by an eye doctor.
But you can take basic eye test online, from the comfort of your own home. Keep in mind that online eyesight test is not a medical test,
and it is important that you see your optometrist or eye care professional on a regular basis.
See your eye doctor if you cannot see your computer screen as well as you want to, or if your computer usage is producing eye strain, headaches, back or neck aches,
Online Eye Test Issues
- Pixel Size: Single pixel can vary so much across computer systems that it almost invalidates any online eye test.
- Screen Size Issue: A larger screen will display the same web object in a larger, easier-to-see size
so the same eye test will produce different results for different screen sizes.
- Screen Resolution: Lower screen resolutions will display the same web object in a larger, easier-to-see size.
- Screen Focus: Some display content with pinpoint focus, but others are blurry.
- Screen Brightness (gamma): The action of screen brightness on an online eye test varies.
- Viewing Distance and Viewing Angle: Variations in distance and angle of viewing will create variations in the online eye test results.
- Color: Variations in color make things easier or harder to see.
- Anti-aliased fonts: While anti-aliasing makes fonts easier to read, up close they are actually blurrier.
- Reflections, room light, peripheral distractions, fatigue: All these make a visible difference to the online eye test result.
